Chirping to a Worthy King

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." ~1 Corinthians 10:31

There’s a nest of wee chicks camping somewhere in our chimney. Throughout the day we hear them chirp away as their folks flutter in with food. God provides even for them. At first I was a little frustrated that of all the chimneys in Stokesdale, they had to intrude upon ours. And yet, upon further reflection, I pondered that they are doing exactly what they were designed to do – chirp and sing and exist to the glory of God in our chimney.

Has God not placed us where we are for the same purpose? Are we not designed to do the same thing, namely exist to the glory of God? We are to manifest the glory of God in our lives. In other words, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). That’s our chief end! So I appeal to you, as I appeal to myself, “to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1).

And yet, the most foundational and pivotal way we can manifest the glory of God in our lives is by engaging in corporate worship on the Lord’s Day. That’s our most important task. Indeed, it’s our greatest privilege. Fundamentally, that’s why we and Christ Covenant Church exist: corporate worship to our Triune God.

And, of course, He is worthy to be prized and worshiped on the Lord’s Day. It’s not hard to say, “I fancy a week off,” or, after the service, “I didn’t get anything out of it.” But it’s about Him, and He is worthy to be worshiped. A few years ago, my folks went on holiday to Sandringham. In a little church in the middle of nowhere, just as the worship service was about to commence, in popped a wee lady and sat a few rows in front of them. Sure enough, at the end of the service, their suspicions were confirmed – it was Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. They could hardly believe it! They couldn’t wait to tell the rest of the family: “We just worshiped with Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II!”

When we enter God’s house, we come to meet with and worship the King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus Christ. And He is infinitely worthy! “Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands and thousands, saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing’” (Revelation 5:11-12).

As we approach the worship of our King this coming Lord’s Day, let us prepare ourselves. Let us determine, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to worship Him with all our heart and soul and strength. He is worthy.
